Buttonwood Park Zoo field trip

Skip had his six year check-up today (several months late since we missed our January appointment which was while were in Russia) so we figured while we out and about early, we'd take a field trip to the Buttonwood Park Zoo. We even convinced Levi to come with us since he had the day off. What a great day we had for it. When we got there at 11:00 it was already close to 70 degrees. The nicest day we've had in weeks! We started the visit with a train ride, then slowly made our way around the zoo. We love it here because it's small enough you can see the whole place in under 90 minutes, close to the house (10 minutes away) yet big enough to keep their interest. Harry was very excited and loved running from one exhibit to the next. I think his favorite was the seals. He LOVED the way they'd take a lap around the pool, then jump onto the cool pavement and sun themselves for a few minutes before sliding back into the water to cool off again. He very much enjoyed the elephants, watching them eat for quite a long time. We have been here often with Skip but this being Harry's first trip, he was just so excited. He wanted to see everything and at times he's stop and sit as if to try and take it all in. So much for a little boy who lived such a sheltered life until just a few months ago!

Skip liked the Aquatic building, and was thrilled to spot an otter. He'd been learning about them recently in school and wanted see one up close. He didn't get that chance since the one we did see was hiding in a hollow log, but he was happy nonetheless to have spotted one. Both boys enjoyed the farmhouse and like milking the cows. Well, sorta kinda. It's a wooden cow with real looking udders that squirt water into the buckets. they thought it was really neat and to be honest, it was pretty realistic! They also got a kick out of this one chicken that was walking along the top of the fence. They kept asking WHY it was walking back and forth. We were surprised to run into a few friends too; Nicki & Steve were there with their three cuties and Danielle was there with Lily. It really was a fun, stress-free day. Of course no trip to the zoo would be complete unless we stopped at the gift shop. They were both happy to pick out a $4.00 magic pen book about animals, so I'd say we got cheap! They are now watching the men preparing to repave our street and I am just enjoying the quiet!
